Probability and statistics is a branch of
mathematics motivated originally by the study of quantitative rules of random phenomena.
In the 20th century, its theory and methods have brought fruitful important achievements
intersecting with other branches of mathematics, natural science, engineering technology
and economy and finance. Probability and statistics has become an effective and indispensable
mathematical instrument in various research areas of natural and social sciences. Now,
probability, statistics and financial mathematics have already become important branches
of the mathematical fields. There are 15 researchers in the division of Probability and
Statistics, including 9 professors, 3 associate professors and 3 assistant professors.
Among them, 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 member of the Third World
Academy of Sciences; 1 chief scientist of 973 project, 1 member of "Hundred Talents Program",
3 recipients of National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars.
